Tooth Colored Filling

Tooth-colour fillings are gaining popularity as a more beautiful choice in cosmetic dentistry or aesthetic dentistry. They are considered as a safe and effective alternative to treat new cavities or act as replacements for old fillings. People prefer tooth coloured fillings to the traditionally used silver amalgam fillings as they score over the latter in terms of better aesthetics. These are free of mercury as a constituent unlike the amalgam fillings where mercury is a major ingredient.

What Steps Are Involved in Filling the Teeth?

A drill will be used to remove the decayed area. Next, the dentist will probe or test the area to determine if all the decay is being removed. Once the decay is removed, the dentist will prepare the space for filling the tooth by cleaning the cavity of debris and bacteria. If the decay is around to the root, the dentist may first put a glass ionomer or a composite resin as a liner, or other material to protect the decay from affecting the nerve. Generally, after the filling is done, the dentist will polish and finish it.

Several additional steps are required for tooth-colored fillings and are as below. After the dentist, removed and cleaned the decayed area, the tooth-colored material is applied in different layers. Later, a special light that cures or hardens each layer is used. It generally takes longer to place a composite filling than it does for a metal filling. That’s because composite fillings require the tooth be kept clean and dry while the cavity is being filled. Tooth-colored fillings are now used more often than amalgam or gold fillings, probably due to cosmetics. In a society focused on a white, bright smile, people tend to want fillings that blend with the natural color of their teeth.
Ultimately, the best dental filling is no dental filling. Prevention is the best medicine. You can dramatically decrease your risk of cavities and other dental diseases simply by:
1.) Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
2.) Flossing daily.
3.) Eating a balanced diet.
4.) Visiting the dentist regularly.
