dietitian

Diet and health are two sides of the same coin. They are inseparable. Dietetics is a science that deals with the adequacy of diets during the normal life cycle and modifications required during diseased conditions. The role of food and nutrition is important in all the spheres of life, from infancy, childhood, motherhood to old age. A knowledge of good nutrition and diet is essential to living a healthy lifestyle. A change in diet can prevent or control many health problems including obesity, underweight, diabetes and certain risk factors for cancer and heart disease. Childhood is the most significant phase for a child’s holistic growth and development. Well-nourished children grow healthier and perform better in schools. They will have weight and height measurements that can be compared with the standard normal distribution of weight and height of a healthy child of the same age and sex. Nutritional gap at this stage cannot be bridged in later stages of life. Here at Sehat Hospital, the Dietary Department stresses the most current and proven innovations in the field of dietetics, child nutrition, maternal health and other child-related therapeutic dietary interventions. Come and step in into the world of well-being!

What is a dietitian?

Dietitians are qualified and regulated health professionals that assess, diagnose and treat dietary and nutritional problems at an individual and wider public-health level. They use the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease which they translate into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices. Dietitians work in the NHS and in private clinics. They work with healthy and sick people in a variety of settings. They can work in the food industry, workplace, catering, education, sport and the media. Other care pathways they work in include mental health, learning disabilities, community, acute settings and public health. They often work as integral members of multi-disciplinary teams to treat complex clinical conditions such as diabetes, food allergy and intolerance, IBS syndrome, eating disorders, chronic fatigue, malnutrition, kidney failure and bowel disorders. They advise and influence food and health policy across the spectrum from government, to local communities and individuals.
Community dietitians develop nutrition programs designed to prevent disease and promote health, targeting particular groups of people. Dietitians in this practice area may work in settings such as public health clinics, fitness centers, corporate wellness programs or home health agencies.

Corporate dietitians work in food manufacturing, advertising and marketing. In these areas, dietitians analyze foods, prepare literature for distribution, or report on issues such as the nutritional content of recipes, dietary fiber or vitamin supplements.

Management dietitians oversee large-scale meal planning and preparation in health care facilities, company cafeterias, prisons and schools. They hire, train and direct other dietitians and food service workers; budget for and purchase food, equipment, and supplies; enforce sanitary and safety regulations; and prepare records and reports.
