Understanding the Common Cold and Flu
Common Cold:
The common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract mainly affecting the nose and throat. Despite being harmless it may not feel like this when your child keeps sneezing, coughing or feeling bad.
Flu (Influenza):
It is a more severe viral infection that affects respiratory system including nose, throat, lungs etc. Influenza can cause serious health problems especially on young children, elderly people, patients with chronic conditions etc.
Symptoms of Common Cold in Kids:-
- Runny or Stuffy Nose: Usually first sign of a cold.
- Sore Throat: Your child might say his/her throat hurts or feels like sandpaper.
- Coughing: A persistent cough that may get worse at night.
- Sneezing: Frequent bouts of sneezes are usual.
- Mild Fever: Sometimes kids have a low-grade fever.
- Fatigue: Your child may seem more tired than usual.

Symptoms of Influenza in Children
- High Fever: A sudden, high fever (often above 102°F or 39°C).
- Shivering and Chills: These often come with a fever.
- Muscle or Body Pains: Severe pains in muscles and joints.
- Headache: Intense headaches are common.
- Unproductive Coughing Spells: Dry cough that can be severe.
- Sore Throat: Similar to cold but may hurt more.
- Lethargy and Feebleness: Extreme tiredness that may persist for weeks.
Feeling sick, diarrhea or vomitting occurs more frequently among children than adults do.
Preventing Common Cold and Flu
- Regular Hand Washing: Advise children to wash their hands with soap and water for at least twenty seconds frequently.
- Avoid Contact with Sick People: Keep them away from anyone who is sick
- Teach Proper Respiratory Hygiene: Train the child how to use tissue or cover mouth with elbow while sneezing or coughing
- Feed Healthily:- Give them a well-balanced diet containing fruits, vegetables, hydration etc. which helps boost the immune system;
- Adequate Sleep:- Ensure your child gets enough sleep so as to keep their immune system strong;
- Immunization – Get your child vaccinated against flu every year;
- Disinfect – Clean toys, door knobs and gadgets regularly used by people;When to See a Doctor
Most cases of colds and flu can be treated at home.
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
- Persistent high fever (above 102°F) that doesn’t reduce with fever medication.
- Symptoms that worsen or don’t improve after a few days.
- Severe headache, stiff neck, or confusion.
- Dehydration (signs include dry mouth, no tears when crying, and less frequent urination).
