Welcoming a newborn into your life is a joyous occasion, but it also brings with it a range of challenges and responsibilities. As a child specialist at Sehat Hospital, I understand the concerns new parents have. Here are some essential tips to help you care for your newborn:

1. Feeding

Breastfeeding: Breast milk provides all the nutrients your baby needs. Try to breastfeed within the first hour of birth and continue exclusively for the first six months.

Formula Feeding: If breastfeeding isn’t an option, ensure you’re using a formula that’s suitable for your baby’s age. Follow the instructions carefully for preparation and feeding.

2. Sleeping

Newborns sleep a lot, but often not for long periods. Create a safe sleeping environment:

  • Place your baby on their back to sleep.
  • Use a firm mattress and avoid soft bedding.
  • Keep the crib free of toys and loose blankets.

3. Bathing

Until the umbilical cord stump falls off, give your baby sponge baths. Once it’s healed, you can start regular baths:

  • Use warm water and mild baby soap.
  • Ensure you have a firm grip on your baby as they can be very slippery.

4. Diapering

Change diapers frequently to avoid diaper rash. Clean the diaper area with each change using mild wipes or a damp cloth, and allow it to dry before putting on a new diaper. Apply diaper cream if needed.

5. Bonding and Soothing

  • Skin-to-skin contact: This helps in bonding and regulating the baby’s temperature.
  • Gentle rocking: Soothe your baby with gentle rocking, soft singing, or talking.
  • Swaddling: Swaddle your baby to provide comfort and a sense of security.

6. Health and Safety

  • Vaccinations: Ensure your baby gets all recommended vaccinations on schedule.
  • Regular check-ups: Visit your pediatrician for regular health check-ups.
  • Hand hygiene: Make sure anyone who handles the baby washes their hands thoroughly.

7. Recognizing Illness

Keep an eye out for signs of illness such as fever, lethargy, poor feeding, or unusual crying. Consult your pediatrician if you notice any of these symptoms.

8. Parental Self-Care

Remember, caring for a newborn can be exhausting. Ensure you rest when your baby sleeps and don’t hesitate to ask for help from family or friends.
